What Is The Correct Structure For A Critical Response Essay

A critical response essay requires that you read a book (essay or story) and criticize certain aspects of it. You don’t have to disagree with everything that the author does but you’ll definitely come across something that you don’t like in the story. This could be the author’s opinions, the style of writing, the methods used, or expressions found within the essay. Your task then becomes to criticize this “flaw.”

Here is the correct structure of writing such an essay;

  1. Read and understand the story
  2. You’re not going to criticize something you don’t even know. So get enough time to read the whole essay and note down your rhetorical analysis.

  3. Provide a summary statement
  4. Every critical response essay starts with a strong summary statement. Essentially, this tells the reader which part of the essay you’re responding to.

  5. Formulate initial personal responses
  6. At this stage, you have already identified that section or sections of the essay that you want to criticize. Now you need to jot down a few points to elaborate what you already know the topic and how the content you’ve just read clashes with your own opinions on the matter. The best way to do this is to note down several questions that you may have about the issue. Thereafter, conduct additional research to make sure your knowledge is accurate.

  7. Reread the essay to establish that the “flaws” truly exist
  8. After conducting your own research, it is time to reread the essay to confirm that the contradictions truly exist. You should be able to determine whether or not the text supports its thesis/theme effectively and whether or not it persuades. Look out for obvious biases, flawed logic, and false arguments. If need be, reread the text for the second time.

  9. Write a position statement
  10. As the name suggests, a position statement is your stance on the matter under contest. It highlights the statement or statements under criticism and makes known your position on the matter versus how the author has covered it. This will form the center of your response. Thereafter make a list of arguments and arrange them in chronological order starting with the strongest.

  11. Write the introduction, conclusion, and then the body of the essay
  12. This is the best way to approach a critical response essay. The conclusion should include a reference to the essay and a consolidation of the points you have discussed. It should also state your final position on the points you have raised.

Ensure that the transition from introduction to body to conclusion is right. If you encounter any problems, get immediate help from your inductor.
