Security is one of the basic needs of the society. Today, there have been numerous threats to the wellbeing of the society. These threats have been linked to the deterioration of security. Due to advancement in technology, security threats have increased across the years. Moreover, different activities such as cyber-crime and terrorism have led to the loss of lives and properties. This has ended up creating the state of insecurity in individuals’ mind. Due to the rise of insecurity, especially due to terror activities, the department of homeland security was formed in order to restore and maintain safety. The main function of the department of homeland security is to maintain and protect the security of America. In order to do this, it has been given power by the government to observe the movement of people and goods across the American border. Moreover, it has been given the mandate to act and respond to different calamities both natural and man-made.


As compared to other departments of the government, the homeland security has an exceptional leadership organisation. The department is the third biggest cabinet department. Its headquarters is based in Washington. A secretary, who is appointed by the president, chairs the department. A deputy assists the homeland security secretary. Below the deputy secretary, there are different agencies that are the core of the department of homeland security. These agencies are seven in number. They are the U.S Coast Guard, U.S Secret Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Transportation Security Administration, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the U.S Customs and Border Protection. Below these agencies, there are divisions within the homeland security. These divisions are nine in number. They are the Management Directorate, Office of Health Affairs, National Protection and Programs Directorate, Office of Operations Coordination, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Domestic Nuclear Detection office, Office of Policy, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre, and Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. These divisions have separate functions that enable the department of homeland security to perform it functions effectively. The department receives its finances from the central government.


The department of homeland security is the third largest cabinet department in America. The department is based in Washington and is headed by a secretary who is assisted by a deputy. Its organization and structure is unique and enables it to maintain the security in the country. The organization has departments that are specialized. Each department has a specific function, which when collectively looked at fulfil the goals of the department for homeland security. In the midst of different insecurities, the department has played a huge role in securing the lives of American citizens.
